Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wow the crowds at Pop Brixton.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met DJs, Presenters at POP Brixton and other staff to hear about their journeys. It was only their second official event as an engaged couple. Pop Brixton has helped over 4,000 young people by offering them training and teaching employment skills using music, radio and the media.

The events and retail complex consists of 1,425 sq metres of public space in the heart of Brixton. Built on disused land it overflows with shipping containers, communal areas and event spaces housing street food stalls, restaurants, bars and independent retailers. There is an art gallery, an event space, a buskers’ corner, a community training hub, balcony terrace and a huge greenhouse.

Pop Brixton supports local enterprise by creating a physical presence for some of Brixton’s most exciting creative, retail and foodie start-ups, read more here.

How was Pop Brixton created?

Pop Brixton is a temporary project in partnership with Lambeth Council which was dreamt up to make a positive impact within the area using what was at the time, an unused piece of land. The project was put out as a bid to local architects with a simple brief of creating “a temporary space which will support small Lambeth businesses, benefit the local economy and engage with the local community”.

Carl Turner Architects won that bid and shortly after Pop Brixton Ltd was formed. We started out as three people sitting around a table in an office not really knowing where to start. Two whirlwind years later we have a full team across events, marketing, design, community, finance and commercial.

Pop Brixton was developed in reaction to high streets brands dominating the capital, and is home to more than 50 young, independent businesses, many of which were set up by local business people.
