25 recycled ISO shipping containers are planned for a 56-bedroom hotel in Liverpool’s Baltic district!
According to the submitted planning documentation the hotel will be built using modular shipping-container units, all mounted into a stackable and demountable complex. The structure is designed for a temporary 15-year lifespan, hence its easy to deconstruct design. This is because the site is actually intended for long-term redevelopment.
The Rooms
Each bedroom is formed from a modified ISO container shell. A single 40ft shipping container will house up to 3 bedrooms. The containers will be insulated internally, clad, lined and fitted with full mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services. This will include heating and cooling, wireless internet connections, cable/sat TV and en-suite wet rooms. Embedded power/data cabling as used at Snoozebox’s other sites will provide comms throughout the complex.
Construction
The containers will be stacked and arranged in layers and grouped. Cranes will lift the containers onto prepared ground slabs which they will be anchored to. Structural loads are transferred via corner posts of the containers into ground footings. Lateral bracing and roof ties ensure wind and seismic resistance, as per container architecture regulatory guidelines. A central core houses vertical risers for MEP services. The peripheral container shells will tie into the core for fire-rating, sound-insulation and service integration.
In Summary
Each container will house more than one bedroom on average as well as ancillary spaces such as corridors, services and lounge areas. This is a technically efficient modular hotel system using container modules, pre-fabricated off-site and crane-set on-site. With full hotel services integrated into container shells the modular form allows rapid build and in turn eventual rapid removal.
