Plans for a Liverpool retail scheme built using recycled shipping containers have been submitted
The 14-unit shopping and leisure scheme will be located in the bustling Lodge Lane of Toxteth when all goes ahead in the autumn of 2018. Liverpool is looking to similar schemes in London and Manchester for inspiration. The developer promises it will be a hip development with an urban vibe and its got trendy local retailers very excited.
The recycled shipping containers will be insulated 150 sq ft units with glazed frontages. They will be spaced out around central courtyard on a landscaped site adjacent to Lodge Lane and Grierson Street. The shipping containers will all be painted different colours, and stacked in various configurations, single and two storey high.
Lodge Lane in Toxteth, South Liverpool is a bustling multi-cultural retail area known for its modern forward thinking. The development will see recycled shipping containers to provide 14 units with trendy glazed frontages.
Says lead developer Nathan Schreiber;
Lodge Lane succeeds because it meets the needs of its local community and, in doing so, has become a draw for the wider city. It’s a big success and try finding an empty shop unit. You won’t. Our aim is to provide more room for local entrepreneurs to grow their businesses in a low-cost, high quality setting.
The development will reach out to a variety of retailers and other businesses. They want to offer easy-in, easy-out terms. This is intended to help reduce the risks associated with the huge commitment of setting up a retail business in the UK and the many local authority requirements and restrictions.

Liverpool Council have been very helpful. Lodge Lane is a great neighbourhood and we want to add to its appeal whilst giving local residents the opportunity to set up or expand their businesses. We want to provide an environment where retailers can test new concepts and products. These are difficult times for the high street but with the right focus on place-making and meeting local needs we know places like Lodge Lane can continue to thrive.
