A Bright, bold Shipping Container Mall has just sprung up in Buenos Aires and the locals love it!
Shopping malls built with stacked shipping containers are attracting large numbers of visitors in cities like London, New York and Christchurch. Now Buenos Aires has its very own hip and trendy shipping container mall designed by BZZ Arquitectura. The QUO Container Center comprises of 57 beautifully painted maritime containers.
The entrance has a container wall painted by local kids to greet customers. Green planting adorns the roof area combined with a solar panel array. You will find fabulous restaurants, cool offices, eco-friendly retail stores and a gallery space with a trendy café. The mall was built as eco-friendly as possible with plenty of open spaces for natural light.
QUO is situated in Mendoza 1667 in a green and leafy town called Ingeniero Maschwitz just outside the bustling Argentine capital. Its a great place to escape to at the weekends where you’ll enjoy a unique shopping experience. Cool restaurants, contemporary offices, eco-friendly clothes shops, a gallery and café are all situated in this triple-storey bohemian mall.
The containers are the star attraction of this mall
QUO was inspired by Londons’ Container City with its round porthole windows. There is both staircase and lift access to the upper levels inside the container stacks, all wheelchair accessible. From the upper level terrace is kitted out with deck spaces where you can take in the views of the surrounding trees, restaurants and shops.
Solar panels produce clean electricity which is used to power LED lit common spaces. Most of the offices are located on the 3,300 sq ft green roof area. Visitors are encouraged to use public toilets as there are none in the converted shipping containers. Sustainable details include floors adorned with Pisotapitas colourful bottle tops, recycled planters and elegant roto-molded polyethylene bins designed by Diana Cabeza.
Low cost and portability along with construction speeds make shipping containers one of the trendiest building material for shopping malls these days. Also if the mall needs to be moved, perhaps because the land lease expires, its can easily be disassembled and rebuilt at a new location.
